Haunted Corn Maze Iowa Will Amaze You

By Alexandra Anderson  :

A typical corn maze is created by carving intricate patterns into a massive field of lush, green stalks. Viewed from the air, these works of macro art make spectacular viewing. To the curious visitor trying to find their way out, these decorative labyrinths can be intimidating. So much more so when the haunted corn maze Iowa is decked out with macabre surprises around Halloween time.

From early October, farmers adorn their masterpieces with spooky ornaments, charge admission and invite tourists try their luck amid the spooks and ghouls. Once the Halloween festivities are over, the crop is harvested. A family-friendly, community social event becomes an ingenious source of extra income for America's hard-pressed farmers.

Corn, or maize, is a yellow cereal grain. It grows on structures called 'ears' on long, strong stalks with broad, long leaves. The scientific name for maize is Zea mays. Records show that it was cultivated since prehistoric time in South America. The golden kernels may be scraped off or served fresh on the ear, as a vegetable accompaniment to a meal, processed and packaged as a popular breakfast cereal or lightly oiled and cooked at high heat to produce popcorn, a savory cinema snack.

Keeping with the Halloween theme, tourists can visit the monument at the scene of the Buddy Holl Crash scene. On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly and fellow rock and rollers the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, along with the pilot of their Beechcraft Bonanza, were killed when the plane crashed in foul weather shortly after take-off. They were on their way to their next gig in Minnesota. By sheer chance, two of those who perished boarded plane at the last minute in the place of other travelers.

The State of Iowa is chock full of grisly and fun places to celebrate Halloween. The Axe Murder House and Museum in Villisca demonstrates perfectly why the state generates more income from the tourism industry than it does from the total annual corn crop. This site in Villisca is where Josiah Moore, along with his wife and their six children, were murdered in their home in 1912.

Halloween is not just for blood and gore. It is also or celebrating quirky and inspiring characters. One such character is James Tiberius Kirk of the Starship Enterprise. His future birthplace is marked by a plaque and a replica of the Enterprise rests in the town square. Every year on March 22, fans flock to the town to visit and pay homage to a fictitious man who won't even be born until the year 2228.

Reminiscent of the Halloween spirit is a strange metal sculpture by the name of 'Odyssey'. Constructed by Albert Paley, an artist from New York, the freaky, four-piece 'Gateway to Iowa' stands 100 feet high and cost $3.5 million to build. Local motorists in Council Bluff have nicknamed the structure, 'Freddy Krueger Hands'. Their disdain is ironic, since the Golden Spike Monument, erected in 1939, stands nearby as a tribute to the Transcontinental Railroad.

Far from the hustle and bustle of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, this quiet little state in the Midwest has more to offer than meets the eye. Haunted corn maze Iowa and huge, quirky statues demonstrate that it has a playful side.
