Healthy Herbs That Are Good For You

Many people now know that drugs are not very beneficial for their health. This has caused an increased search for healthy herbs. While many of these natural medicines are already known, scientists are always making research to find out if there could be more usefulness in them. This research is good because it will help man cure a lot of problems and depend less on the harmful chemicals. Some widely acknowledged ones include spearmint, terragon, celery, dandelion, rosemary herb and mint.

Basil is recognized by several people as the king of herbs. It is one of the oldest and it comes with lots of phytonutrients for man's benefits. The herb is expensive in some areas and it is highly respected in some traditions across the world. The scientific name of this useful herb is "Ocimum basilicum". Varieties of basil include Mediterranean Cultivar (sweet basil), Asian basil, lemon basil and Thai basil.

Basil herb has a lot of health benefits. For example, its chemical compounds are responsible for preventing disorders and diseases in man. It is also very rich in orientin, vicenin and other polyphenolic flavonoids. Polyphenolic flavonoids are known for their effectiveness in preventing the dangerous effects of radiation on the skin. It also contains essential oils like eugenol, linalool, citral, terpineol and citronellol. The oils help to fight against bacterial infection.

Beta-carotene, vitamin A, cryptoxanthin and zea-xanthin are some of the most useful elements in the basil herb. In fact, many people value the herb a lot because these compounds are present in large amounts. They are used to reduce aging symptoms that appear on the skin as one grows old.

Celery herb grows well is very common in the Mediterranean region. It is useful as medicine as also as food condiment. Known scientifically as Apium Graveolens, it is known to grow well in areas where the soil has good amount of moisture and nutrients. People who are overweight can use celery herb without worrying about weight gain. In fact, the herb's low calories and large amount of non-soluble fiber even help to support weight loss. Other useful chemical elements in it include vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, riboflavin and lutin. Lutin is an important flavonoid that helps to prevent cancer.

Dandelion herb is another important one. It is hard to find any part of the plant that has no significant importance to man. It has the scientific name, Taraxacum Officinale, but it is also known as priest's crown, monk's head, lion's tooth and Irish daisy. Even the roots are rich in powerful antioxidants that fight against several diseases. Since only about 45 calories of energy can be obtained from 100g of it, it is recommendable for those who want to lose weight. Potassium, iron, manganese and magnesium are other important elements in the herb.

Garlic is another plant that is used as medicine and food ingredient. Its medicinal values include protection from coronary artery disease, cancer and infection. It is also a good preventive medicine for stomach cancer.

Other healthy herbs include Rosemary Tarragon herb, sage, savory, peppermint and sweet marjoram. Sweet marjoram is also used in cooking delicious meals. It also contains Vitamin A and zeaxanthin.
