Weight loss surgery has become a common and beneficial weight loss solution for those classified as severely overweight and obese. For many people struggling with obesity, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise schedule is not realistic and the subsequent self loathing that is associated with carrying such excess weight only reduces the adoption of healthy habits even further. The introduction of weight loss surgery as a respected and reputable form of weight management has allowed overweight individuals with no previous hope of controlling their weight, a possibility to live healthy and fulfilled lifestyles.
There are several types of weight loss surgeries available in North America, including Gastric Bypass surgery, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery and Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery. All three of these surgeries are available as laparoscopic surgeries, which are far less invasive than traditional surgeries and allow for a far shorter recovery period with fewer complications and side effects.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass surgery is performed within the abdomen where stapling instruments are used to partition a very small portion (approximately five percent) of the stomach for food consumption. The small portion of the stomach, referred to as a gastric pouch, is then connected directly to the small intestine so that food is deposited directly from the gastric pouch into the lower portion of the intestine, bypassing the remainder of the stomach - hence the name Gastric Bypass. This procedure allows for one to feel full sooner and in turn eat less, as well as consume and retain fewer calories.
Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery is different from Gastric Bypass surgery in that a larger portion of the stomach, approximately 25 percent, is portioned off for food consumption, while the remaining 75 percent is surgically removed. The remaining portion of the stomach is sewn together, forming a sleeve with a banana shape. Because the remainder of the stomach is removed, this surgery is permanent and as a result one will be left with a significantly smaller stomach for the remainder of their life. This surgery is also preferred for individuals whose risk of undergoing a successful Gastric Bypass surgery is too large.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery differs from the previous two surgeries, in that a surgeon places an inflatable silicone ring around the upper part of one's stomach, creating a small, upper stomach pouch. The silicone ring limits the amount of food that one can eat, reducing their appetite and slowing the digestive process. With the ring in place, one will feel fuller sooner and sustain the sensation of fullness for a longer period of time. The band is also adjustable and can be easily tightened or loosened without the need of surgery. Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery is the most minimally invasive gastric surgery option of the three listed, as no portion of the stomach is surgically altered.
It is important to understand the options of weight loss surgery that are available to overweight and obese individuals. The three surgeries listed above are examples of weight loss surgeries most often performed in North America; however it is important to consult a physician when considering which weight loss surgery may be best for you.
